The Turtle Mural came about from a desire to bring art to the children of a small fishing village on the coast of El Salvador. A group of educators under the guide of Ingles Sin Limites, a nonprofit that works with empoverished communities in the country of El Salvador, have been conducting summer camps with the students of the Gesuina Meltzi school. I have been traveling to El Salvador with this group to teach art and organize the students in the creation of collaborative art projects. The image of the turtle was selected because the school is located near a beach where turtles arrive every year to lay their eggs and to bring awareness to the need to protect this local species.
